Gateways

My son and I spent 8 months building our driveway gate together. A great project for him to learn to bring a project together. Planning, executing, welding with all the mishaps that happened along the way.

This project all started off a unique find of large gates from Craigslist. My goal to keep the chickens in the yard became a piece of art.

A ditch was dug from the house to bring infrastructure to the road. Electricity for the lights and opener, co-ax for security, water for a hydrant for the chicken coop, and a drain line out to the culvert.

Foundation holes were dug so Used Thick metal pipe could be welded together and form the driveway entrance. 8 yards of concrete was poured for the foundation, so the gate would not fall over. The first mishap happened when my son tack welding part or the gate together on the tristands. He wanted to flip it over and finish tack welding it. I told him he needed to weld under the tristands. He insisted so we got the skid steer and attempted to flip it. It all fell apart. 

2 months of welding brought the new driveway together. We drove Tposts and then stretched fence from the edge of the property.

With concrete poured and fence welded we brought out the heavy equipment and hung the gates.

With the gate up, we drug everyone else out of the house to break out the paint brushes and put on the finishing touches. 10” ball lights on top of the gate posts. We also installed Remote controlled gate openers from Ghost controls.

We even added a little bit extra. Solar panels to power the gate opener. We put up security cameras that we can see who is at our gate. Our second mistake falls on me, I undersized the electrical pipe from the house to the gate this having to abandon some extras.
