Embracing Comfort and Efficiency: Radiant Heat system 15 years later

Fifteen years ago, I embarked on a unique home-building journey with my father, constructing a 50×50’ building that not only stood as a testament to our shared craftsmanship but also boasted a revolutionary heating system – radiant heat in the concrete floors. This article delves into the intricacies of this innovative heating approach and its enduring impact on comfort and energy efficiency.

In the heart of our building project lay a carefully crafted concrete floor, six inches thick, embedded with 13 3/4” PEX radiant heat loops. The meticulous separation of the structure into three zones – shop, apartment, and garage – allowed for tailored heating solutions in each space. Insulated tarps strategically placed between the dirt and concrete served as an additional layer, ensuring optimal insulation and energy conservation.

At the core of our heating system was a wood-burning boiler, a nod to sustainability and eco-friendliness. This choice not only provided efficient warmth but also aligned with our commitment to a greener lifestyle. Three thermostats, acting as the command centers for their respective zones, allowed for precise temperature control, catering to the specific needs of the shop, apartment, and garage.

Radiant heat emerged as the unsung hero of our construction venture, offering a range of benefits. The even distribution of heat across the concrete floor eliminated cold spots, creating a consistently cozy environment. Additionally, the system’s efficiency translated to reduced energy consumption, aligning with our commitment to responsible living. Over the past 15 years, the radiant heat has proven its reliability and stood the test of time.

Over the last 15 years it has remained a durable system. No leaks from any of the PEX tubing inside the concrete. We have replaced the water pump 3 times, all due to the motor pump overheating. Having to replace 1 solenoid valve. And removing the heat exchanger from the hot water heater as the new water heater didn’t have the fittings for it.

The decision to employ a wood-burning boiler not only contributed to the efficiency of our heating system but also championed sustainability. The renewable nature of wood as a fuel source, coupled with its carbon-neutral footprint, added an environmentally conscious dimension to our home. The radiant heat system, with its ability to harness and retain warmth efficiently, became a cornerstone of our commitment to sustainable living.

As I reflect on our journey with radiant heat, the enduring comfort and efficiency it has brought to our home stand out. Beyond the warmth that radiates from the floor, our decision to embrace this innovative heating approach aligned with our values of sustainability and responsible living. Fifteen years on, our radiant heat system remains a silent yet powerful force, shaping our home into a haven of comfort and efficiency.
